From Sketch to Bulk: Inside the Step-by-Step Apparel Manufacturing Process

apparel clothing manufacturing process

For emerging fashion brands and experienced procurement managers alike, navigating the clothing manufacturing process can feel like peering into a black box. Understanding exactly what happens after you submit your tech pack not only reduces communication errors but also ensures your production stays on schedule and within budget.

As a dedicated B2B clothing ODM/OEM partner, we believe transparency is the foundation of trust. In this guide, we’re taking you behind the scenes of our manufacturing process, highlighting the critical quality control (QC) checkpoints that protect your brand’s reputation.

Step 1: Tech Pack Evaluation & Pattern Making

Every successful clothing line starts with a solid blueprint. Once we receive your design concepts or tech packs, our engineering team evaluates the feasibility of the custom cuts, fabric compatibility, and sizing charts.

Our master pattern makers then translate your 2D designs into digital patterns using advanced CAD software. This step determines the precise fit and drape of the final garment, establishing the grading standard across all sizes (from XS to 5XL+).

Step 2: Sourcing & Fabric Lab Testing

Fabric is the soul of apparel. Based on your specifications for fabric weight (GSM), composition, and hand-feel, we source the raw materials from certified mills.

Before a single yard is cut, the fabric undergoes strict laboratory testing for:

  • Shrinkage Rate: Ensuring the garment won’t shrink drastically after the first wash.
  • Color Fastness: Testing against rubbing and washing so colors stay vibrant.
  • Pilling Resistance: Crucial for premium cotton T-shirts, hoodies, and underwear.
Step 3: Pre-Production (PP) Sample & Approval

We never rush into bulk production without your green light. We create a Pre-Production (PP) sample using the actual fabric, trims, and accessories intended for your bulk order.

This is the exact replica of what your customers will receive. Bulk manufacturing only begins after you inspect, fit-test, and sign off on this sample.

Step 4: Precision Cutting & Fabric Relaxation

Before cutting, knit fabrics (like cotton jersey for T-shirts and Pique for Polo shirts) must be unrolled and allowed to “relax” for 24 to 48 hours to release tension. This completely prevents twisting and distortion after cutting.

Once relaxed, we use automated spreading and precision cutting machinery to maximize fabric yield and ensure every single panel is cut with millimeter accuracy.

Step 5: Assembly Line Sewing & In-Line Inspection

During sewing, your garments pass through specialized workstations. For example, a custom Polo shirt moves from collar attachment to placket sewing, then sleeve assembly.

We implement an In-Line Inspection system (Inline QC). Instead of waiting until the garment is completely finished, QC inspectors check the stitching, seam strength, and SPI (Stitches Per Inch) at intermediate stations to catch and fix any issues immediately.

Step 6: Branding, Ironing & Final Quality Audit

After sewing, custom elements like woven labels, care tags, and heat-transfer neck prints are added. The garments are then professionally steam-ironed to remove wrinkles and shape the product.

Every piece goes through our Final QC Station (100% Inspection), where we double-check:

  • Symmetry and structural alignment.
  • Final measurements against the approved sizing chart.
  • Loose threads (which are meticulously trimmed).
Step 7: Packaging & Global Logistics

Approved garments are folded, placed into individual polybags (custom branded biodegradable bags are available), and packed into sturdy, moisture-proof export cartons. We provide full packing lists and coordinate with your freight forwarder—or handle the entire sea/air shipping process for you—ensuring a smooth customs clearance right to your warehouse.

Conclusion

A seamless manufacturing process isn’t just about machinery; it’s about rigorous quality control at every single touchpoint. Partnering with a manufacturer that prioritizes process transparency ensures fewer delays, consistent sizing, and premium quality that keeps your end-consumers coming back.
